Kawhia, West Coast.Portbound for aweek due to bad weather.
There are new photostoshow you what work we are now involved in.

July 12th...hmmm regular updates not my thing, sorry.I'm sure your hanging on the edge of your seats for news of Helenes adventures. Good news, we splashed last week and matt has been working over in new Plymouth, where I'll be joining him in a few days.We now plan to return to the Uk in September. Poor ole matt was on anchor watch last night in new Plymouth with 70 knots blowing through.Meanwhile i sit next to a real fire supping red wine with Luke and his family. Luke helped me to get Helene on a mooring , where she will stay the winter, and so now I'm taking it easy, glad to be done of jobs aboard the boat.
May 31st
Helene has her holes welded up now, at last and flamin nora are we glad to be putting back together the insides we have torn out in order to get to the rusty bits.We are staying on Seans boat Starkeys( the one we worked on last year) as Helene is a pigsty with no toilet, cooker or anywhere to sit , sleep or sneeze.
Just another 2 weeks optimistically speaking, and then she'll be back in the water splashing joyfully, whilst we may be off working again in New Plymouth for a few weeks. No delivery of boats from Saff Afrika, or kiwi picking.
So now we have photos.

28th April

Photos to be updated real soon...watch this space. You HAVE to see our lovely Helene. She is now dottie with holes in her hull . Matt is welding big ugly slabs of steel to cover them up .Then we might pick kiwifriut, or deliver an ex trawler back from south africa. Keep you posted. Off soon with luck.See you all in UK some time July ?aug.
2nd April

Are we glad to be back on terra firma again after an epic 5 week stint working for those evil oil barrens again. We were the devils disciples, and now we must repent.
In the meantime we are back in Tauranga, drinking laittes.
We delivered the work boat the Margaret Phillipa back up from Dunedin to Auckland, a 5 day trip, where Matt caught a 45 lbs ( 20kg) Kingfish, (piccies in file).
I spent my birthday on board, where the boys cooked all day for me and baked cakes and sent flares up into the sky and they all got me expensive gifts and I got drunk on watch danced on the aft deck and swam with the dolphins , and then right, get this.....I woke up and realised i was actually living this nightmare aboard a rusty hulk of an old fishing trawler, in the freezing arse cold of 48 degrees south, cooking and cleaning up after 3 smelly boys, trying to sleep in a cabin above the generator spewing out 96 DECIBELS, and where I had to don my wellyboots just to go to the bathroom.

My sanity and hearing have yet to be returned. Send to the address below if you can help and should you wish to wish me a happy bloody birthday you miserable lot. Forgiven Rhys for forgetting to remember. It's my 40th on MARCH 5th and whilst I will be back in the yUK I shall indeed be making up for the 3 birthdays spent at sea and be in dire need of a tree hugging, mud bathing, flower power, earthy, wholesome and generally landlubberly birthday bish bash bosh.
Put it in yer diary.Remember remember the 5th of Marchember.

You can contact us or send mail to
C/o Marion kelly 361 K kaitemako Road, Welcome Bay, Tauranga, RD5, Bay Of Plenty, NZ.

Togs' Birthday March 5th, so you can send a letter to above address and the pigeon will fly out to us on the boat.

Valid until about mid June, when we shall be hopefully flying home.

biscay : Hi Guys

First log written by Jack the Cornish Cabin Boy.
Ahoy there my landlovin hearties, Tis I, Jack the Cabin Boy. We have made it to Portugal after tales of blue horizons, huge sea creatures and storms. As I am writing this email down on a piece of paper the sun is rising over Portugal, the 1st land we have seen fur many a long day, we have got dolphins playin in the phosperesence off our bow and a blood red sky over the coast to our east and stars to the west.

We got eere a coupla days later than expected but bang on schedule as always. The Bay of Biscay legend and reputation lived up to er name as she tested uz from start to finish.

We left Falmouth on a fine sunny day, out into the English channel. Old friends waved uz off as we left and got greeted by a so’ westerly wind. Which is a coincidence because that wus exactly the way we wanted to be going. So the first coupla days was a tick tacking affair, sailing a good 100 mile a day but only making 50 or so as the haddock swims.

As we made our way outta the channel and passed Brest we got many a visit by pods of dolphins, splish splashin and playin in our bow. Twas not til the third day that things started to get really interesting. We were making good progress down the Bay of Biscay, when the weather turned nasty on that particular day.
Togs and I talked on deck, about energy and all its forms, when a big black ball of it came charging t’ward us. The wind went from a steady 20 – 25 knots straight to the 35-40’s.
We were forced to run down wind and reefing in priddy much all the sails. The sky went black and the winds wassu blowin. Sheets of rain poured down and the sea was alive.

We ran around battenin down the hatches and gettin all set to ride out the night. As the night went on , the storm intensified, the wind got stronger and meaner, and the seas getting much bigger. Helene(boat) is lovin every second of it, as was I , with a big grin from ear to ear, but I must admit, as the night turned to day, my cheeks were getting a bit tired.

Throughout the night we was getting pushed so’west t’ward the coast of Spain, called the Cote de Mort, which translates as the Coast of Death. With a name like that, we didn’t wanna push our luck, so the decision was made to tack nor’west , straight back into the eye of the storm. With the swell and wind right on the nose it made the ride a bit more bumpy at times. Here we stayed for the next 15 or so hours, not goin anywhere much but, gettin the shit knocked out of uz. The weather was not easin much as the wind was risin up to the furious 50’s and the swell was pickin up to a good 15ft.

As the novelty factor and the exitement wore off the next day, we were all stood on deck without much t’say, when Togs spotted a pilot whales cumin our way. Surfin and jumpin through the big swells, which livened us up no end, you’ll never guess waddappened next.
A huge white silhouette was comin right t’ward uz. Bugger me, twas a 40ft fin whale. It cum right up next t’boat, gave uzza wave wiv it’s huge tail and a smile with it’s gigantic mouth and a blow with it’s oversized nostril on the top of it’s head. He hanged out for a while to make sure we were all well before headin off back on his way into the furious ocean. He fully revitalized us just as we were needin it most. After that, the next 12 hours or so wuzza breeze… although a very strong breeze never the less. That day seemed to fly by, in the daylight you could really appreciate the raw powerful beauty of the storm, with black skies, sheet rain, rainbows, awesome winds and savage seas, so much power. Twas a good 2 days and nights before the storm let off her grip and let uz tack and head off sow’west. As we left the storm behind uz, we were saluted off by a purrfick rainbow with gigantic black alto cumulus clouds as a back drop extendin thousands of feet inta the stratosphere. In front of uz wassa magic red and orange sunset. We pulled in the main sail and charged our way south. Togs and matt went down below to get their first bitta sleep they’d had in days. I stood up on deck as Helene started to fly. I felt fully *****, but stoaked wiv everyfing. A great couple a days.

Days 5, 6 and 7 have seen us with great winds, more whales , dolphins, turtles, tall ships and a fly by by some bloody lunatic Portugese aircraft, numerous sunsets, starry nights and hot sunny days. We’ve been eatin like kings, in fact Matt pulled in the1st beautiful Dorado, this evening which we ate whilst watching another fantastic sunset, with plenty left over for sushi rolls the next day, my next shift is at 5am, and we should see the coast of Portugal for the 1st time, it don’t come much better than that.

Lots of love to you all .

Jack Tar.

P.s I’m about to wake up the other’s with ‘It’s a Beautiful Day’ –U2 ….loudly….hee hee.

Pps As the sun rose, the golden sunstrip was directly in line with the borders of Spain and Portugal. Spain on the left and Portugal on the right, dolphins jumpin all around uz, as beautiful day is pumpin outta the stereo.

With special thanks to Togs ,Matt and Helene and of course to Neptune and Kwan Ying.

OCTOBER 1ST

BOM DIAHola from Helene and her smelly, salty crew who are now in a place called Cascais, not far from Lisbon. We have enjoyed surfin Supertubes, catching the trams in Lisbon, eating sardinas, bartering el mercados for the juiciest peaches. The inflatable kayak has been great for whizzing about to chat with other yotties doing the same thing. We have met a Dutch guy who is heading to New Zealand too, hoping to claim it back. We have bent our anchor in this place, due to some foul rocks under us...it wasn´t mentioned in the almanac , but 3 other boats had trashed anchors or broken chain, as the wind howls offshore in the evening and creates big strain on our boat, but good business for the local dive club.

Anyway big salty kisses to yáll and keep you posted in a week or so as we travel south.Next stop SESIMBRA. See you there.

OCTOBER 5th

We are now in Sines a sleepy little historical town with a very sheltered harbour. The wind looks set to change to south west so we may leave tonight for Lagos.
It´s matt´s birthday on Friday..so we are planning a pirate party and I will attempt to make a cake. But for now we are enjoying a quiet anchorage where we can get a good night´s sleep. We took our anchor shore with the help of our Dutch friend Martijn and we spent a hot couple of hours smashing it about with a huge piece of wood and wedging it between the rocks to bend the flukes back straight again..it worked.we have also found a Lidl that sells cheap wine(Spanish) so we made a trolley dash back to the boat with 48 litres of red white and rose all for 35cents a litre...we did sample it before hand and it´s not too shabby.
I have made a huge peace flag which we hoisted at sunset yesterday. We have just about exhausted all we can do in this place having done ABC(Another bloody castle)and found this internet place after a struggle..it´s the only place open today because it´s a national holiday,(celebrating democracy after 30 years.)
So adios until next time ..(any suggestions for a decent website with easy uploading of photos most welcome.)See you in Lagos, where will will spend a few days up river and wash the weeds off our bum.Togs matt and jack xxxx

OCTOBER 16th

River Guadiama on Spanish/Potugese Border

We have been bound under the spell of river life, and have been here 7 days already. It all started when we heard of a party from Nick, (who has designed and built a WYLO, a beautiful trad gaff rigged steel boat, who we knew from back on the river in Plymouth)
So we have come 20 miles up to a little spot, where bamboo and willow nod in the breeze along the banks, and blue darts of kingfisher flash past and huge logs float past scraping our hull , and come out the other side covered in antifoul paint. Our fiends Robin and Jackie have made it too(also from Plymouth). We hear of great stories of how folk end up here, from many who just visit for a day or two, and end up buying a valley and never to return to the uk.
So we have been warned by many at the party, to make sure we leave soon, or it may never ahppen.I hope their intentions are good, or they may just plain ole wanna get shot of us...wouldn´t blame em.
I have heard that pat and dave who own keynsham marina live here in the winter...low and behold I have just bumped into them and now we have been invited to a BBQ.Oh hell will we ever leave.
Until then...love and kisses.Togs matt and Jack.xxx

19th

Waiting for a good weather window before we haed off to the canaries.off to bbbq later.have enjoyed a good evening with our pal Nick , who owns a WYLO (see Yachting monthly this month)he is a eccentric ole salt who fly´s a peace flag and mutters abuse at us when we wizz by in our dinghy with the outboard poring out fumes.(he rows everywhere)hope to build a dingy in carribean.
Much love xxx m,t and j

November 1st

Lanzarote. We arrived here last night(31st Oct) at 10pm into yet another attractive port full of cargo ships, where we anchored safely next to a few aussie boats. We made a jack o lantern from a pumpkin and used it as an anchor light(bought in the uk that is still fresh as a daisy). The trip here took us past Morroccan coast in very light winds which dropped out most nights where the sails would flap about keeping us awake, and many sail changes, grumpy crew with cabin fever and feeling like ellen mcartur crying with frustration.Added to that Matt´s dad died a year ago so prayers and thoughts for him please. The new film with Wallace and Gromit has his and matt´s name in the credits, we are gutted we cant view it anywhere, but proud of "Jones the Blow" as Den was affectionatly known as by Aardman. We were so sorry to hear of the fire too.

Anyway, we are pleased to stretch our legs and make contact home.
Ps The bread came out fab by the way Jo, and i also made a carrot cake...Draga at the cafe eat your heart out.

Sat here in a flippin arcade of all places so concentartion levels scatty as I can hardly hear myself think. We are meeting my bro in a few days in Fueterventura, and off asap to cape verde.tempted to go to Senegal up river gambia.Keep you posted.
Until next time tara togs matt and jack xx

3rd November

At last met up with Mark and Lor in Fueterventura. We left Lanzarote at 10pm arrived by late afternoon to be greeted by bootlenose dolphins and a phone call from bro Mark saying he could see us sailing in the distance from his hotel balcony. We anchored in the bay and swam ashore meeting Mark in the water "fancy meeting you in the middle of the atlantic".They took us up to the hotel for free sangria and a lounge next to the pool before legging it back to the boat pretty pronto as the wicked winds drop in fast off the mountains.Jack was aboard keeping anchor watch in a very rolly sea.
We are now in cyber world again after mooring in a cute little harbour 5 mins taxi from hotel and are all dressed up to go back for more free sangria and a hot shower ..haven´t had one this month...should be a good night.Lots of love Togs and mattxx

Nov 5th Good night drinking cocktails la dee da at Mark and Lor´s posh hotel. We managed to get up early for a windsurf for an amazing 10 euros for 2 hours in a lagoon on the edge of the sea.Mark learnt a water start and to gybe and Matt managed to gybe ,not bad for a supposed beginner(bugger)Jack was rubbish and is sticking to surfing, naturally i was awesome. We said farewells to bro and now will wait again for a good weather window to Gran Canaria...it´s blowing it´s bits off at the mo.

Togs and matt out.x

Nov 13th

Just recovering from hard night drinking and dancing to groovy vibes at the WOMAD Festival in Gran Canaria.I also bashed me head on the anchor winch handle..so feeling a littel delicate. It´s sunday so a chilled day looking at the ARC boats..set to race across pond in a week´s time .
We pick up a straggler tommorow from Tenerife..Cai, who is coming across with us...more smelly boys...please put out a request for female crew...Please!!!
Matt´s been fixing the rudder tube stuffing gland, which was seized and leaking...but all sweet now .Dad you will be pleased to hear the gas has been plumbed in..so now we have a pipe leading from the bottle out on the transom.
We did a MASSIVE shop for food in Fueturventura....had to get a van to deliver 16 large boxes full of a 3 month supply of tins and cartons of milk and juice and chocolate( prioriy supplies)etc.
We has a little party on board at Morro Jable marina...cute place where we met with an aussie family and a family we had met up the River Guadiama( they sail a 100 year old little gaff rigged wooden boat Vilona May)I shamed myself on the guitar and said I aspire to Phoeboe from Friends.
Looking forward to the cape verdes now, so you may not hear from us for a while...but if you do ..please update web via my dads email...(scrollup)
Big thanks to mum for the goodies and Cd´s...still not opened presents.
love to all. Togs Matt and Jack.x

November 15th

Hi, from Tenerife, where we have just picked up the straggler Cai, loaded up with lady grey tea bags( i have a fetish) and a huge jar of marmite...bless him.We left Gran canaria after another night at the Womad Fest, where we had an amazing night watching the Wailers ( Bob marley fame)and the crowd mellow and bumpin to the da rhydum.we left early for tenerife sailing thu the night arriving at first light to a little place called Los Galletas, not far from a big place called Playa de Los Americas , our next stop for fuel water and last minute boat repairs and maintenance b4 a weeks sail to Verdes.

Novemeber 16th

In Los Christianos.Big place. At anchor.Had haircut.Been swimming.Cai had first sail round the corner from his pick up point Los Galletas 8 miles to LC. He was helming down wind, with a cuppa and chatting away ...multitasking!Bloke ?
Cai not only brough lady grey and marmite, but an Ipod with some groovy tunes we can listen thru our car stereo..( now a boat stereo)and a xmas pud stollen cake and xmas crackers...good lord have we gone mad.many thanks matt´s mum.xxx
We plan to go to Gomera, one of the best islands so we hear, for a big walk b4 being at sea for a week...(don´t tend to get much walking in when at sea).Cai is a good climber so he´ll shimmy up mast for his excercise no doubt.
Anyway not much has happened since last update, so hasta luego !

T, M, J & C

Novemeber 17th

Found a English speaking computer geek who has helped me download photos.so you will be pleased and you can stop nagging now, that i have new photos to view.We are still in Los Cristianos, and have just bought a big bit of foam for Cai´s bed.Jack is doing jobs on the boat and we are desperate to get out of here now. We have to go to Los Colon..delightful name, to get fuel as they seem to have run out here.So we are now set for Verdes...honest.
via Gomera for a day or two.Much love T,M, J and C .

Nov 21st November

We are in La Gomera...the most spectacular island, where we spend a day in the National park, walking through forrest full of lush ,green vegetation ,the first we have seen for months. It rained all morning on the peak some 1480metres, but cleared after we had stopped for lunch in a mountain cafe...paradise for walkers. The views from then on were beautiful the walk taking us across rivers and up steep terrain .we finally made it some 8hrs later to the road just before sunset and were able to hitch in a pick up truck back to the marina. The marina at the mo is full of rowers racing across the Atlantic ...a few British teams, one from Bristol and an all female crew, all getting their boats ready....they must have lost their marbles .we are suffering enough after walking for 8 hrs, but they will row for 40 days at best.

Cai is doing well apart from being bitten alive by the mosi´s...fresh new welsh blood aboard.we are buying a mosi net later today.we may hang on here another few days for a gale to pass thru...poor buggers leaving in the Arc race will have head winds for a day or so.

Goota go , have been on my laptop all day sorting photos and my head is spinning, not used to sitting on computer all day.
